Philadelphia singer/song writer Alex G dropped into Fort Worth and mesmerized a sold out house at Tulips on Thursday night. With over 3.5 million listeners on Spotify, 9 albums, 2 EPs, and a film score under his belt the 29-year-old has already reached cult star status.
Alex G’s Indie repertoire is melodic and tranquil at times but never lacks dynamics or complexity. His modest, playful lyrics effortlessly walk you through the dark with his inner-child, while changing vocal effects and metaphoric leaps from song to song keep him just out of reach, offering something for everyone and no one simultaneously.
The walk through Alexland started around 9:10 p.m. with “S.D.O.S.” off his latest release, God Save the Animals. The next 8 songs were a smooth stroll with 5 tracks from his latest album until he hit the crowd with “Brick”, a heavy track with an industrial flare from his 2017 release Rocket. Alex followed up with “Horses” from the same album before ending the 19-song set with “Forgive”, a fan favorite from God Save the Animals.
After a 3-minute hiatus, Alex and crew returned onstage to a roaring crowd. The encore, which was kicked off with “Gwan” from his debut album Race, included “Forever” from his 2012 release Trick and “Sugarhouse” from his 2019 release House of Sugar.
Alex reminded the house Halloween was right around the corner and gave the crowd a treat by finishing the 9-song encore with a cover of the ghoulish classic “Monster Mash”.
Alex and the band finished the show around 10:45 p.m. and said their thanks to the crowd. It was a beautiful October night and the majority of the exhilarated fans moved to the patio… where the conversations began.
